I know I still have time, but I have to say I have considered it. Actually what I have heard about and would LOVE would be a homeschool group, where 4-5 moms get together and each take a day to do a subject. Mom 1 would have math mondays, mom 2 would do science Tuesdays and so on, that way you have the whole socialized child, but in a controled environment.

I guess I hear too many horror stories of kids growing up too fast and teaching each other things. I want my girls to stay little girls for as long as I can.

So does anyone here homeschool?

Those with school aged kids, did you have concerns like mine that ended up being a non issue when you got them in?

I have 5 children..ages 9,7,5,2 and a half, and 3 months. I started researching home education when the youngest were toddlers and haven't looked back since. It has truely been life altering for our familiy..in a wonderful way! I wouldn't change a thing. Indiana is a great enviroment to home educate.. home schools are legally considered private schools in Indiana and there are many support groups and co ops. If you can't find one to meet your needs, consider forming one! There are lots of local groups and there are many state wide groups on yahoogroups. Search online for many educational options to choose from and Home School Legal Defense has state by state legal information and updates at http://www.hslda.org/Default.asp?bhcp=1 It can seem overwhelming at first to sort through all the info.. you really aren't in a rush, you have time, so I encourage you to pour yourself a cup of coffee and pull a chair up to the computer and see what you can find! Our lives are so much richer for it, I think and I have met so many warm, interesting people in our HS adventures. LMK if you have any questions or just want to chat about your options.

That is a neat idea about the moms co-oping homeschooling! I have the same concerns you do I suppose. It bothers me to hear about kids fighting worse than they do when we were kids, and yes they know so much more these days. How I long for the days of Mayberry!

I am planning on sending him to school though. I was planning on being a helper mom for the first few years, the new baby puts a wrench in those plans, but I will figure something out.

I am starting homeschooling next year, with my 5 year old and 3 year old. There is a really cool co-op that meets on the west side called EduKids. It's not exactly what you described but I visited it and was duly impressed. I wrote an article for the Courier Westside about it...the article will be out on Friday and it will be on the website...I will post a link.
There are actually several co-ops in town. http://www.swihe.org/ might have some information about it.

I don't homeschool, and I really didn't seriously consider it before my older son started school. Now that I see what school is like, I can see the advantages of homeschooling. I spend so much time with my first grader on homework. If I worked with him one-on-one, we could cover much more than his class of twenty does, and I think he would grasp concepts much faster. My husband and I have basically taught him to read. They rarely practice reading at school. It's done as homework. I think the public school route as a whole is best for us, because I don't know if I have the discipline and patience for homeschooling, and I need to go back to work at some point. I also think kids need to be in some sort of classroom situation, whether a school or homeschool co-op, to prepare them for the workforce. But there are days when I wish I could just have him at home to work with him one-on-one!

I guess it plays into my desire to teach, but I have more patience with my kids than I do other kids. I can threaten to kill my kids, you more than likely wouldn't appreciate it. There is just so much to think about and options to weigh. I guess I should start a list! Pros and Cons. Anyone want to help me? Homeschoolers give me the Pros and cons of homeschooling and those who send them to school give me the pros and cons of that? This can get fun...

If you read it, it was the cover story last Friday. It's about the EduKids homeschool co-op. I was really impressed with the co-op and I'd reccommend it to anyone!
